Your Cape Get Away

Unleash the Fun: Best places to take your dog while staying in Chatham (2025)

One thing I love about Chatham (there are so many!) is that I can experience it all with our two dogs, Toby and Phoebe. They are more than just pets, they are part of our family unit. This is why it was really important as we started hosting Pleasant Chatham Cape that we open our home up to other like-minded guests who appreciate and prefer to vacation with their fur-babies. So, as you plan your next visit, here are some great spots to explore with your four-legged companion during your stay in Chatham. From sandy beaches to scenic trails, we got you covered!

1. Paws in the Sand: Beaches for Dogs

The beach is a must have stop! Phoebe loves the beach so much that it’s hard to get her to leave! And while Chatham has several dog friendly beaches that allows pets in the off-season only (from mid-September to end of April), Jackknife Harbor Beach is dog-friendly all summer before 9AM and after 6PM. If you are visiting in the off-season you have a number of beaches to choose from:

    • Pleasant Street Beach (just a short walk down the street from Pleasant Chatham Cape)
    • Hardings Beach
    • Cockle Cove Beach
    • Forest Beach
    • Oyster Pond Beach
    • Ridgevale Beach
    • South Beach
    • Lighthouse Beach

Remember to bring a leash (we love this one that comes in different lengths so they can safely run and explore) and clean up after your pup to ensure a paw-some experience for everyone.

2. Tails on Trails: Scenic Hikes

If you and your dog love exploring nature, Chatham offers two great options.

    • The Cape Cod Rail Trail is a must-visit for outdoor enthusiasts. This 22-mile paved path winds through picturesque landscapes, providing a perfect opportunity for a leisurely stroll or invigorating jog with your furry companion. Be sure to keep an eye out for bikers during the busy summer months!
    • The Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge via Morris Island is a great spot to hike and see the Cape Cod shoreline during the off-season with your dog. Dogs are not permitted in the summer, from May to mid September to protect the nesting wildlife.
3. Woof-tastic Dining: Dog-Friendly Restaurants

After a day of adventure, treat yourself and your pup to a delicious meal at one of Chatham's dog-friendly restaurants. Mom + Pops is a favorite for us, serving up amazing burgers and Philippine dishes and offering a dog-friendly patio. Mac’s Seafood is another great choice, known for its fresh seafood, bustling atmosphere and pet-friendly outdoor seating. Both Phoebe and Toby give them a 4-paws up! Tip: remember to check with the restaurant beforehand to ensure their pet policies haven't changed.

4. Fetching Fun: Dog Parks

For some off-leash playtime, head to Thompsons Field Conservation Area just a short drive across the Harwich line. Here you will find 57 acres and 2.75 miles of trail to explore. The area is popular with dog-owners and a fun spot for your dog to meet new friends and tire out with a game of fetch. There is ample parking and a water source at the entrance.

Chatham, and Cape Cod in general, is a haven for dog owners, offering a wide range of dog-friendly activities. Whether you're exploring the sandy beaches, hiking scenic trails, enjoying a meal at a pet-friendly restaurant, or letting your pup roam free at a dog park, Chatham has something for every canine adventurer. So pack your bags, leash up your furry friend, and get ready for an unforgettable vacation on the Cape!

Cheers!
